Materials

What are fish leather boots?

Fish leather boots are Western boots made wholly or partly from tanned fish skin. The leather keeps the pattern of the pockets where scales once sat, which gives it a distinctive textured surface. It is frequently combined with cowhide or other leathers.

What is Pirarucu leather?

Pirarucu leather comes from the pirarucu, or arapaima (Arapaima gigas), a large freshwater fish native to the Amazon basin. Its large scales leave large, overlapping pockets in the tanned skin, creating a bold pattern. Read more in our Pirarucu guide.

Is all fish leather the same?

No. Different species produce different patterns, from fine and dense to large and sculptural. Tanning and finishing — glazed, matte, sanded or dyed — further change the look.

Why do my boots look slightly different from each other?

Fish leather is a natural material. Pocket size, spacing and color can vary between panels, and some variation between the left and right boot is normal.

Style & Fit

Are Western boot sizes consistent between brands?

No. Sizing varies by maker, last and toe shape, so your size in one Western boot may differ from another. Measure your feet and check the sizing information for each specific pair. Our Size Guide explains how.

What affects Western boot comfort?

The main factors are the last's shape, a snug instep, a secure heel, adequate width across the ball of the foot, the toe shape, the heel height and the sole's flexibility. Break-in also plays a role.

What are common Western boot toe shapes?

Common shapes include pointed or snip toes, narrow toes, round toes, R-toes, square toes and broad square toes. Each changes both the appearance and the space available for your toes.

How can I compare different Western boot styles?

Compare four elements one at a time: toe shape, shaft height, heel style and material. Our Collections page explains each and how they work together.

Should a new Western boot feel tight?

The instep should feel snug and a small amount of heel lift is normal. Painful pressure, numbness or toes pressing against the front are signs of a poor fit.

Care

How should fish leather boots be cared for?

Brush off dust with the direction of the pattern, spot-clean with a slightly damp cloth, let the boots dry naturally and condition sparingly with a product suited to the finish. Test any product on a hidden area first. See the Boot Care Guide.

How should boots be stored?

Upright, in a cool, dry and ventilated place, with boot shapers or shaft inserts to hold their form. Breathable cloth bags protect against dust; avoid sealed plastic and direct sunlight.
